FAQ

What is S.A.M Singapore Math?

S.A.M (Seriously Addictive Mathematics) is a comprehensive math enrichment program based on Singapore Math – a globally recognized method that emphasizes problem-solving, logical reasoning, and deep conceptual understanding.

We combine a two-pillar approach:

  • Classroom Engagement: Small-group instruction with a certified trainer.

  • Worksheet Reinforcement: Individualized worksheets tailored to each child’s pace and level.

S.A.M vs. Other Math Programs
Program Main Focus Teaching Approach Ideal For Key Difference from S.A.M
S.A.M Singapore Math Conceptual understanding, critical thinking, problem-solving Personalized coaching using Singapore Math’s CPA Method (Concrete → Pictorial → Abstract) Ages 4–14, all levels Builds strong foundations and higher-order thinking through guided discovery + independent practice
Kumon Speed & accuracy in arithmetic Repetitive, incremental worksheets Early learners or students needing fluency Emphasizes computation/discipline; less focus on multi-step problem-solving and reasoning
Mathnasium Catch-up, homework help, reinforcement Instructor-led tutoring aligned to school Students needing grade-level support Helps keep up with school; S.A.M emphasizes conceptual depth and independent thinking
Russian School of Math (RSM) Rigorous logic & reasoning Structured classroom, theory & proofs Students seeking high academic rigor More teacher-led/formal; S.A.M is more personalized and discovery-based
AoPS Advanced problem-solving & competition math Proof-based, fast-paced, abstract challenges Gifted/competition-oriented students Built for advanced learners; S.A.M builds conceptual mastery before acceleration
Think Academy / Contest Prep Enrichment & test/contest preparation Class-based teaching with practice sets Students aiming for math contests More exam-driven; S.A.M focuses on mastery and balanced learning habits
What ages/grades is S.A.M suitable for?

S.A.M is designed for children ages 4 to 14 (Pre-K to Grade 8).
Each child’s learning plan is personalized based on ability and readiness, not just age or school grade, ensuring steady progress and confidence at every level.

How often are the classes?

Classes are typically held once a week, with each session lasting about 60 minutes, depending on the student’s level and the center’s schedule.
Between classes, students complete homework to reinforce what they’ve learned and build consistent practice habits.

Is the program aligned with Common Core or school math?

Yes and no.
While many skills align with U.S. Common Core standards, the S.A.M curriculum is internationally benchmarked and often goes deeper and broader in problem-solving and reasoning.
As a result, students frequently see stronger school performance and greater confidence in math.

How can I monitor my child’s progress?

We believe in partnering with parents to support every child’s success.
Our system includes:

  • Ongoing progress monitoring in every class

  • Periodic assessments to track growth and mastery

  • Feedback sessions with trainers available by appointment

This ensures you stay informed and involved in your child’s learning journey.

Do you provide homework?

Yes. Our Worksheet Reinforcement System ensures that students practice consistently at home. Each worksheet is:

  • Custom-assigned based on your child’s mastery and learning pace

  • Designed for independent learning with clear instructions and examples

  • Reviewed weekly with trainer feedback to track progress and address challenges

This approach helps students strengthen their understanding between sessions and develop confident, self-directed learning habits.

Will my child be ahead or behind compared to school math?

Most students who consistently attend S.A.M classes progress ahead of their school level—not only in content, but also in thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
At the same time, our personalized approach ensures that children who need extra support can build confidence and catch up at their own pace before moving ahead.

How do you assess my child’s level?

Every student begins with a comprehensive placement assessment that identifies their current math skills, strengths, and learning gaps.
This allows us to customize the starting point and learning plan so your child is challenged—but never overwhelmed.

Who are your teachers?

Our certified S.A.M trainers are:

  • Trained in the Singapore Math pedagogy and teaching methods

  • Passionate about helping students grow in confidence and understanding

  • Skilled at working with children of different levels and learning styles

Regardless of their background or degree, every trainer must complete our official S.A.M training and certification program before teaching. This ensures consistent quality and the proper use of our proven methods.

What are your tuition fees?

Fees vary by location and frequency. Please contact your nearest center for current pricing and promotional offers.

The S.A.M Difference

At S.A.M, we believe every child can be great at math if they understand it.

Unlike other math enrichment programs, we teach children to understand what math concepts really mean, so that computations are no longer a jumble of numbers and symbols; they hold meaning and dictate numerical relationships. By developing students’ critical thinking, logical reasoning and problem-solving skills, we equip them with the tools to tackle math with total confidence.

S.A.M Two-Pillared Approach

The S.A.M thinking math program complements Singapore schools’ curriculum with a two-pillared approach of hands-on Classroom Engagement and Comprehensive Worksheet Reinforcement to develop interest and mastery in math.

Classroom Engagement

Research has shown that children aged 12 and below learn better when they have close adult supervision and tactile activities. This is why we have designed our class size to be small and trainers have one-on-one time with each child.

We use the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach to help students understand an abstract subject such as math.

  • Concrete stage is the “doing” stage where children use physical objects such as manipulatives.
  • Pictorial stage is the “seeing” stage where children use drawings or pictures.
  • Abstract stage is the “symbolic” stage where children use abstract symbols to represent math.

Worksheet Reinforcement

Created by a team of former Singapore school teachers and textbook publishers, S.A.M worksheets’ tasks are comprehensive, varied and incrementally advanced, so that learning is kept challenging yet achievable, to keep children motivated.

Through guided practice in class and independent practice at home, children develop mastery in math, problem-solving and thinking skills, self-discipline and good study habits.

9 Levels Of Math Mastery Worksheets

We use a comprehensive diagnostic assessment to pinpoint the topics a child has mastered and the topics the child needs more support with. Then, we prescribed a personalized learning plan tailored to each child at their own skill level and pace, because no two children learn alike.

In addition, we use the coaching approach with probing questions and a lot of encouragement to help students explore, discover and build confidence towards math.
